Live Event Report of Regent University's Thursday Night Unchapel Service

Regent University’s Unchapel Experience:

On Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, at 8 p.m., Regent University held their weekly unchapel service. The service is open to all students, and students are allowed to bring up to two guests, as long as their guests bring some form of identification with them. Students, who want dinner, will arrive at 7:30 p.m. The food is sponsored by someone every week; one week might be a church; another week might be Regent’s Student Alumni Association. However, there seemed to be no sponsor for this week’s dinner of pizza from Domino’s. After the students fill their stomachs and mingle with friends, everyone heads into the chapel. The service starts with a few students sharing annoucements of various events happening around campus. This week, Regent students Kayla Phaneuf, and Luke Parker shared announcements. Next, student workers Ashli Hill and Bryan Smith, two representatives from Regent’s Career Services, spoke about upcoming career-related opportunities for students to partake in. A student then gave his testimony, and afterward he led the congregation in prayer in preparation for worhip. The worship experience at Unchapel is different for everyone. Some sit quietly, some raise their arms while closing their eyes and others go to the front to dance, kneel or wave their arms around. After a powerful worship experience, the speaker for that night stands up to preach. Unchapel has four speakers that they rotate throughout the semester. Pastor Mark Lawrence, the head director, Jeff Gossman, the associate director, Daniel Keever, a student and Christian Ellis, another student, are the speakers for this semester. Pastor Lawrence’s message centered around human intimacy, and at the end he gave an altar call to all those willing to surrender their past broken sexuality. Interviews were conducted afterward, and interviewee Dawn Rogers described her unchapel experience as “engaging, powerful and exciting.”
